The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of a prolonged heatwave across the country in the coming days, with temperatures expected to reach 41°C in some parts of Nigeria.
The agency said projections indicate that the high temperatures could persist over the next few months, raising concerns about potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Extreme temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, heat rash, fainting, body weakness, dry lips and respiratory complications.
To minimise these risks, residents have been advised to drink plenty of water throughout the day, eat fruits and vegetables, wear light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing, and apply sunscreen when outdoors.
They are also encouraged to remain in cool, well-ventilated environments and take regular breaks from prolonged exposure to heat.
People have been advised to watch out for warning signs such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, excessive sweating, fatigue and unusual body weakness, and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
Residents are further advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly between noon and 4pm, as well as strenuous outdoor activities during peak temperature periods.
Excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeinated beverages should also be avoided because they may contribute to dehydration.
The agency's advisory also highlights the need for extra care for children, older adults and people with underlying health conditions, who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat.
Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to protect their health and remain hydrated throughout the period of elevated temperatures.
