Several supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were reportedly injured, while vehicles conveying them were damaged in an attack on the road to Funtua, Katsina State, ahead of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s 2027 re-election campaign flag-off on Wednesday.

The incident reportedly occurred along the Malumfashi–Funtua route, where groups of suspected political thugs allegedly attacked APC supporters travelling to the campaign venue.

One of the affected supporters, Abubakar Lawal, said their vehicles came under attack while they were making their way to Funtua for the event.

According to accounts from some of the victims, the attackers hurled stones and other objects at the vehicles, smashing windows and assaulting passengers. Several vehicles were reportedly damaged, while a number of supporters sustained injuries.

The victims called on the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice. They also urged security agencies to strengthen protection around political activities to prevent further violence as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Despite the reported attacks, Radda went ahead with the planned campaign flag-off in Funtua. The event is part of his administration’s efforts to present its record and development agenda to residents across Katsina State’s three senatorial zones, 34 local government areas and 361 wards ahead of the governorship election.

Meanwhile, party sources attributed the incident to internal disagreements within the APC, expressing optimism that the differences could be resolved. However, the claim had not been independently established as of the time of filing this report.

There was also no official statement from the authorities regarding the reported attack, the number of people injured or the extent of damage to the vehicles.

The incident raises concerns about the safety of political supporters travelling to campaign events, with calls for a thorough investigation and stronger security measures to prevent a recurrence as political activities intensify ahead of 2027.
