Abuja Power Supply Drops as AEDC Blames Transmission Constraints, Low Generation

Residents of Abuja and other areas served by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) are facing reduced electricity supply following transmission challenges and low power generation across the national grid.

AEDC disclosed the development in a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday, attributing the situation to technical issues affecting power transmission from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

According to the distribution company, TCN has been experiencing operational challenges since Tuesday, resulting in disruptions to electricity supply across the Federal Capital Territory and parts of AEDC’s franchise area.

The company explained that the tripping of transmission lines supplying Abuja from the Shiroro Transmission Station significantly reduced the volume of electricity available for distribution. Available power supply reportedly dropped from about 641 megawatts to 314 megawatts, cutting the company’s capacity to meet customer demand by more than half.

As a result, AEDC said it had commenced load shedding across several feeders, including some Band A feeders, in an effort to manage the limited power available from the transmission network.

The situation has been compounded by low electricity generation nationwide. AEDC noted that the National Control Centre (NCC) had reported reduced generation levels, further worsening supply challenges and limiting the amount of power that can be transmitted to distribution companies.

“We understand the impact this has on our customers and sincerely regret the inconvenience,” the company stated.

AEDC said it was working closely with relevant stakeholders in the power sector to address the challenges and maximise the distribution of available electricity while efforts continue to restore normal transmission and generation levels.

The company appealed to customers for patience and understanding, assuring them that updates would be provided as the situation improves.

The latest development adds to concerns over the stability of electricity supply in the country, where transmission bottlenecks and generation shortfalls continue to pose significant challenges to the power sector.
