The leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Yaqoub Zakzaky, has urged young people to use their youthful years for meaningful activities, including worship and efforts to uphold the religion of Islam.

Zakzaky made the call during his address at the closing ceremony of an international youth conference themed “Youth and the Future of the Islamic Struggle”, organised by Jaishu Shahid Ahmad Zakzaky (JASAZ), a platform affiliated with the movement, in Abuja on Saturday.

He described youth as a critical period in a person's life, noting that it was defined not merely by age but also by enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to productive activities.

The cleric also addressed views suggesting that establishing God's religion was impossible because of limited resources or the fact that not everyone in society was Muslim.

He stressed that the objective of the Islamic struggle was not to force people to become Muslims or members of the Shi'a sect, but to promote the establishment of God's religion.

According to him, this means upholding divine laws and ensuring that laws contrary to God's teachings are not introduced.

He cited the 19th-century Islamic scholar Sheikh Usman dan Fodio and the Islamic Republic of Iran as examples, arguing that the presence of non-Muslims in a society does not prevent efforts to establish a system based on Islamic principles.

Zakzaky expressed confidence that attempts by opponents to suppress the Islamic struggle would fail.

He urged members of the wider society to remain steadfast in defending what they consider to be the truth rather than remaining passive observers of events.
