Residents of Funtua, one of Katsina State’s busiest commercial centres, are grappling with renewed fears following a suspected bandit attack that sent panic across several parts of the town and reignited concerns over the security situation in the area.

The incident, which occurred late Thursday night, reportedly saw heavily armed gunmen move through parts of the metropolis while firing sporadically, forcing residents to remain indoors for hours amid uncertainty and fear.

Witnesses said the attack began around 10 p.m. and affected areas including Kasuwar Mata, Dandaji and the Sokoto Bye-Pass corridor stretching towards the vicinity of the ASA Bread Company. Residents described hearing sustained gunfire from multiple directions, creating an atmosphere of confusion and anxiety across the town.

Speaking on the development, a resident, Malam Muhammad Bello, said the sounds of gunshots echoed through several neighbourhoods for nearly two hours, leaving many families terrified.

According to him, residents stayed locked inside their homes as the shooting continued intermittently until about 11:30 p.m., fearing they could become victims of stray bullets or be caught in any confrontation between the attackers and security personnel.

“The shooting lasted for hours and people were afraid to step outside. Many families remained awake throughout the night because nobody knew exactly what was happening,” Bello said.

The incident reportedly disrupted normal evening activities and heightened fears among traders, motorists and residents who depend on the town’s vibrant commercial environment for their livelihoods.

Another resident, Malam Ja’afar Musa, said security operatives swiftly mobilised to the affected areas after receiving reports of the attack. He noted that residents cooperated with security agencies by staying indoors and sharing useful information that could assist ongoing operations.

Musa praised the prompt intervention of the security forces, saying their response helped prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

“The presence of security personnel gave residents some confidence and helped contain the situation before it escalated,” he said.

For many residents, however, the latest incident is another reminder of the persistent security challenges facing communities within and around Funtua Local Government Area.

A local trader, Abdulrahman Shehu, expressed worry over what he described as the increasing threat posed by armed criminal groups operating in neighbouring communities.

He warned that repeated incidents of kidnapping, armed attacks and other criminal activities could have serious consequences for economic activities, education, transportation and the overall wellbeing of residents if not urgently addressed.

“The latest attack has renewed fears among the people. There is a need for stronger measures to stop criminals from infiltrating populated areas,” he said.

Residents also voiced concerns that continued insecurity could discourage business activities in Funtua, a key economic and transportation hub that connects several communities within Katsina State and neighbouring regions.

Adding his voice, another resident, Malam Sa’idu Garba, called on security agencies to intensify patrols, strengthen intelligence gathering and improve rapid-response mechanisms to tackle emerging threats.

He stressed the importance of deeper collaboration between security agencies and local communities, arguing that timely information-sharing could help prevent attacks before they occur and restore public confidence.

Meanwhile, the Katsina State Police Command has assured residents that the situation remains under control.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, said security agencies were actively responding to the threat and taking necessary measures to safeguard lives and property.

His assurance comes as residents continue to call for sustained security operations and stronger preventive measures to protect communities from future attacks and restore a sense of safety across the Funtua axis.
