Veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has revealed that her decades-long reputation as Nigeria’s most feared on-screen mother-in-law and village tormentor may not have been accidental after all.

The award-winning actress said she believes God gave her a special niche to convincingly portray witches, wicked mothers-in-law, and other villainous characters that have become synonymous with her name in the Nigerian film industry.

Speaking during a livestreamed interview with content creator Carter Efe, Ozokwor reflected on the roles that made her a household name across Africa, stressing that while many viewers associate her with cruelty and mischief on screen, her real-life personality is the complete opposite.

According to the actress, she detests injustice, conflict and wickedness, but sees acting as a tool for teaching moral lessons and provoking self-reflection among audiences.

“I think God gave me that niche. I hate every ill because I don’t like injustice, war and rancour. When you give me those roles, I try to bring everything into them,” she said.

For many Nigerians who grew up watching Nollywood in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Mama G’s name became almost inseparable from dramatic family feuds, supernatural plots and relentless battles between daughters-in-law and their overbearing mothers-in-law.

Her performances were so convincing that some viewers genuinely believed she possessed the same intimidating traits in real life.

Over the years, countless jokes, memes and social media conversations have painted Ozokwor as the unofficial president of Nollywood's association of wicked mothers-in-law. Yet the actress says her commitment to such roles was never about glorifying evil but exposing its consequences.

She explained that every villainous character she portrays is intended to serve as a warning, helping viewers understand the dangers of bad behaviour and the rewards of living a righteous life.

“If you are taking part in any of them, you have to be careful and know the end thereof, for the end justifies the means.

“Know what will happen to you if you live a terrible life, and know what you will gain if you are a good person,” she said.

Her comments have reignited conversations about the impact of actors whose performances become so powerful that audiences struggle to separate the character from the individual behind it.

Few actors in Nollywood have achieved that level of influence.

For decades, Ozokwor's commanding screen presence, piercing expressions and ability to embody difficult characters helped define an era of Nigerian cinema.
