Thousands of Nigerians living in the United Kingdom may soon see an end to the frustrations associated with delayed passport services as the Federal Government rolls out a special intervention designed to clear application backlogs and speed up document processing.

The initiative comes amid persistent complaints from members of the Nigerian diaspora over lengthy waiting periods for passport renewals and fresh applications, a challenge that has affected travel plans, employment requirements and access to essential services for many citizens abroad.

In response, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), acting on the directive of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has assembled a dedicated intervention team to travel to the UK and provide immediate support to affected applicants.

The team is expected to arrive on Monday and begin a targeted operation across selected cities, where immigration officials will conduct enrolment exercises and address a growing number of unresolved passport requests.

Officials said the exercise is intended to assist three categories of applicants: Nigerians whose passport applications have remained pending, citizens seeking fresh passports, and individuals whose passports are approaching expiration and require renewal.

The move is being viewed as part of the government’s broader effort to modernise passport administration and improve service delivery for Nigerians outside the country. Over the years, diaspora communities have repeatedly called for faster and more accessible passport services, arguing that delays often leave applicants stranded with expired travel documents.

Rather than requiring applicants to travel long distances or endure prolonged waiting periods, the intervention will bring passport services closer to Nigerians across various parts of the UK, allowing immigration officials to process enrolment requests directly and resolve outstanding cases more efficiently.

Authorities have directed participants to come prepared with completed application documents and evidence of payment to facilitate smooth processing during the exercise.

While announcing the intervention, the Nigeria Immigration Service disclosed that operational details, including locations, dates and schedules for each city, would be released in the coming days. The agency cautioned applicants against visiting any venue before the official timetable is made public.

According to immigration authorities, all updates relating to the programme will be communicated through the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom and other verified government platforms.

The latest deployment reflects increasing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen engagement with Nigerians abroad and address administrative challenges affecting the diaspora community.
