Nigeria has stepped up health screening for international travellers as authorities introduce new entry requirements for passengers arriving from countries affected by Ebola transmission.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) announced that travellers coming from countries with active or relevant Ebola transmission will now be required to complete health declaration forms upon arrival in Nigeria.
The move comes as health authorities continue to monitor an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and reassess the potential risk the disease could pose to Nigeria.
According to the NCDC, the new measure is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen surveillance at the country’s points of entry and ensure that any suspected case is identified quickly.
Travellers arriving in Nigeria from countries not considered relevant to the current Ebola situation are not required to complete the declaration forms at this time.
The health agency said Nigeria remains on high alert as it continues to monitor developments surrounding the outbreak and coordinate preparedness measures in response to any emerging threat.
The NCDC stressed that the situation is being closely watched and that surveillance activities could be adjusted as new information becomes available.
The latest precautionary step reflects Nigeria’s broader strategy of detecting and containing infectious disease threats before they gain a foothold in the country, particularly where international travel could facilitate transmission.
Health authorities are therefore urging travellers and relevant stakeholders to comply with the new screening requirements as surveillance continues at Nigeria’s borders.
