Shettima Begins First Leave Since Taking Office, Takes Two Weeks Off for Study and Reflection

Vice President says break will focus on intellectual renewal as administration pushes ahead with Renewed Hope Agenda

Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave after receiving approval from President Bola Tinubu, marking his first official break since assuming office on May 29, 2023.

The leave, which began on Thursday, August 6, 2026, is intended to provide the Vice President with time for study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to enhance his effectiveness in public service.

According to a statement announcing the development, the period away from official duties will allow Shettima to review the administration’s ongoing programmes, broaden his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for the next phase of implementing the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Since the inauguration of the Tinubu administration, Shettima has remained a key figure in driving and coordinating several government initiatives, particularly in economic development, food security, humanitarian interventions, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.

The Vice President also serves as Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC), the constitutional body that brings together governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other top government officials to deliberate on policies aimed at strengthening the nation’s economy and improving citizens’ welfare.

Beyond the country’s borders, Shettima has represented President Tinubu at several high-level regional and international engagements, where he has championed Nigeria’s interests in areas such as economic integration, investment promotion, peace and security, climate action and sustainable development.

The statement emphasized that the Vice President remains committed to the principles of loyalty, duty and selfless service that have characterized his tenure, while continuing to support President Tinubu’s vision of a safer, more prosperous and productive Nigeria.

He is expected to return to office at the end of the two-week leave, bringing what the statement described as renewed energy and dedication to the task of national development.
